Contemporary interior design reflects the way we live today, bringing together architectural simplicity, thoughtful functionality and a refined approach to materials and furnishings.

Unlike styles associated with a particular historical period, contemporary design continues to evolve. It embraces clean architectural lines, sculptural furniture, expressive materials and carefully balanced contrasts.

At Lou Joia Studio, we interpret contemporary design through a Scandinavian sensibility, creating distinctive residential interiors where craftsmanship, proportion and individuality take centre stage.

Modern interior design refers to a particular design movement rooted in the early to mid-20th century, characterised by functional forms, clean lines and a rejection of unnecessary ornamentation.

Contemporary interior design describes interiors shaped by the present day, incorporating evolving materials, architectural approaches and influences from different design traditions.

At Lou Joia Studio, we draw inspiration from both, combining the enduring principles of modern design with a contemporary approach to materiality, furniture and architectural detailing.

Scandinavian interior design is rooted in Nordic design traditions, with a particular emphasis on natural light, functionality, simplicity and warmth.

Contemporary design offers greater freedom in colour, materials, sculptural forms and architectural expression.

Our approach brings these influences together, allowing the restraint and craftsmanship of Scandinavian design to inform contemporary interiors that feel individual, expressive and timeless.

Contemporary interior design can complement period properties, traditional Irish houses and established family homes.

The objective is not necessarily to remove original architectural features, but to establish a thoughtful relationship between the existing character of a property and modern living.

Through considered spatial planning, bespoke joinery, contemporary lighting and carefully selected materials, we create interiors that respect the architecture while introducing a refined, modern sensibility.

Based in Dublin, Lou Joia Studio works with private residential clients across Dublin, County Wicklow and selected locations throughout Ireland.

Our projects range from individual room transformations to complete residential renovations and new-build homes.

Each residence is approached individually, combining contemporary design, thoughtful craftsmanship and a deep appreciation for architectural character and everyday living.
