Distinctive and expressive, Calacatta Viola is defined by its luminous ivory ground, animated by sweeping veins of burgundy and violet. Each piece is entirely unique, revealing its own rhythm, movement and natural intensity.

Carved into a sculptural vessel, the stone balances delicacy with drama. Fluid veining moves across the pale surface like a composition in itself, giving each piece a rich, architectural presence while retaining an effortless sense of refinement.

The fragrance is composed with the structure and complexity of a fine perfume, unfolding through dark fruit, spiced florals and warm, mossy woods:

  • Top notes: Berry, Blackcurrant, Green Leaves

  • Heart notes: Clove, Geranium, Rose, Jasmine

  • Base notes: Musk, Moss, Sweet Woods

Berry and blackcurrant introduce a dark, vibrant freshness, lifted by green leaves. Clove then brings warmth and depth to rose, geranium and jasmine, before the composition settles into a soft base of musk, moss and woods.

Hand-poured in Dublin using natural soy wax, each Lou Joia candle is designed as both fragrance and object. Once the candle has burned, the marble vessel remains, an enduring piece to be reused and lived with.

Presented in a hand-sewn black velvet pouch and finished with a discreet Lou Joia brass signature at its base.

  • Calacatta Viola is Copenhagen to me.

    It is the city I return to every year and the one I carry with me when I am designing. There is a way the Danes live with light: softening it, gathering it, lighting a candle in the middle of the afternoon simply because it makes the room feel kinder. Hygge, they call it. A word for the small, deliberate art of being at home in a moment.

    That feeling is what I wanted to create.

    This candle is the lift of a Copenhagen morning and the hush of its long blue evenings. Berry and blackcurrant and green leaves at the top, the brightness of spring through a window. Clove and geranium and rose at the heart, the romance of a table set for people you love. Moss and musk and warm wood at the base, the quiet, grounding pleasure of a home that holds you.

    The marble matched the feeling before I had words for it. Soft ivory, animated by violet veining that runs through the stone like something alive. Delicate and unexpected.

    Of all four pieces in this collection, Calacatta Viola is the one most people fall for first. I understand why. It is the easiest to live with, the easiest to love. It does not ask anything of you. It simply lifts the room.

    Each candle is composed from a carefully balanced blend of waxes, a high-quality fragrance concentrate and meticulously selected wicks, chosen to ensure an even burn and a beautiful diffusion of scent.

  • An artisanal creation, your Lou Joia candle deserves considered care. Following these simple steps will help preserve its quality, optimise its burn and allow you to enjoy it safely.

    Prepare your space

    • Place the candle on a flat, stable and heat-resistant surface.

    • Protect delicate surfaces, including wood and marble, with a suitable tray or candle plate.

    • Keep away from flammable materials, children and pets.

    The first burn

    • We recommend lighting your candle with a long match.

    • On the first burn, allow the wax to melt evenly across the surface, creating a full melt pool. This may take up to approximately 4 hours depending on the fragrance and surrounding environment.

    • Allowing the wax to melt evenly helps prevent tunnelling and encourages a consistent burn throughout the life of the candle.

    • A small amount of smoke may appear when the wicks are first lit.

    While burning

    • Do not burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time.

    • Never leave a burning candle unattended.

    • Do not move the candle while lit or while the vessel and wax are still hot.

    • Keep away from draughts and heat sources.

    After each use

    • Extinguish the flame gently, preferably using a candle snuffer.

    • Once extinguished, carefully re-centre the wicks if necessary.

    • Before each new burn, trim the wicks to approximately 3–5 mm to encourage a clean, controlled flame.

    When to stop burning

    • Discontinue use when approximately 5 mm of wax remains, or when the metal wick sustainers become visible.

    Care & storage

    • Allow the candle and wax to cool completely before moving or handling the vessel.

    • We recommend airing the room after burning your candle.

    • Keep your Lou Joia velvet pouch to protect the candle between uses or for storage.

    • Store in a cool, dry place between approximately 15°C and 25°C, away from direct sunlight and excessive heat, to help preserve the fragrance, wax and natural stone vessel.

    • Best suited to small and medium-sized spaces, with a softer fragrance presence in larger rooms.

    • Fragrance is released gradually, reaching its optimal diffusion after approximately 20 minutes.
